Eight people have been killed after a car bomb rammed a restaurant and exploded, witnesses claim.

Witnesses said that restaurant and three nearby cars were destroyed in today’s blast. They also described blood on the floor and said another cafe had been damaged. Cops said the blast took place near the compounds of the security and sports ministries.

Official sources put the number of people killed at seven, though they admit that may increase over time.

Ambulance director, Abdikadir Abdirahman, said: "So far we have carried seven dead people from the blast. Casualties may rise.”

The incident occured after the new security minister, Mahamed Abuukar Islow, took office and promised to tighten security.

Abdifatah Omar Halane, a spokesman for Mogadishu's mayor, pinned the attack on al-Shabaab, a group allied to al-Qaeda.
